Southcentre Mall, Calgary · delivered through MammothXR
A snowman who waves back, in the middle of the mall.
An augmented reality installation for Southcentre Mall in Calgary, built with MammothXR, that puts a life-size animated snowman on screen with the shoppers walking past.
The brief
Southcentre wanted a holiday attraction that stops people, gets them in front of it with their kids, and gets shared. It had to run all season, unattended, in a busy mall corridor, and cope with anyone from a toddler to a stroller-pushing parent stepping into frame.
What we built
- 01
A large-screen AR installation where a camera feed of the corridor is composited with Sammy, an animated character who reacts to the people in front of him.
- 02
Body tracking so Sammy notices, follows and plays with visitors rather than looping on his own.
- 03
Set up to run every trading hour for the season with no operator and a recovery path if anything falls over.
What it does now
Shoppers stop, wave, and take the photo, and Sammy keeps performing from open to close for the whole holiday season.
