Tradie Websites in Melbourne: Free Builders vs a Real System
Tradie websites in Melbourne compared: free website builders, template packages, agencies and Rootech, with job pages, review texts and support built in.

Every week a Melbourne tradie is told they can have a website for free. Drag in a template, add a logo, type your phone number, done by lunch. Then the site sits there, the same as the day it went up, while the jobs you finish every week never make it onto it and the reviews you meant to ask for never get asked.
Short answer: Free website builders are fine for a tradie who wants a page with a phone number and nothing else. They stop being cheap when you need the site to win work: they come with no system for turning finished jobs into pages, no review requests by text, and no one to fix things but you. A tradie website built as a system, with job pages, Google review texts and support included, does that work for you.
What are your options for a tradie website in Melbourne?
There are five common routes, and each suits a different tradie. Here is how they compare on the things that decide whether a website wins you work.
| Free or DIY builder | Template package on a monthly plan | Big digital agency | Freelancer | Rootech | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who builds it | You | The provider, from a template | A team of account managers, designers and developers | One person | Engineers, directly |
| Upfront cost | Low or nothing | Low | High | Varies | Fixed price before you sign |
| A page for every finished job | Only if you write it | Rarely | Usually an extra project | Usually not | Built in, two minutes from your phone |
| Google review texts after each job | No | Rarely | Usually not | Usually not | Built in, one tap for the customer |
| Who fixes it when it breaks | You, with the builder's help centre | The provider, while you keep paying | A ticket in a queue | Whoever is available | Bug fixes included after launch |
| Who owns it | The builder's platform | Often the provider | Usually you | Usually you | You: code, domain and data |
None of these is wrong for everyone. The question is which one fits the way you work.
When is a free website builder the right call?
When you need something live this week and you have more time than money. A free or cheap builder such as Wix, Squarespace or WordPress.com will get a page up with your services, your phone number and a contact form, and if you are just starting out, that is a reasonable first step.
Know what free means before you commit. Wix's own plans page says a paid Premium plan is what lets you connect your own domain and remove Wix branding from your site, so a truly free site runs on the builder's address with its branding on it. That is not what a customer comparing three tilers wants to see. Check each builder's current plans, because they change.
The bigger cost is your time. A builder gives you the tools. Writing the pages, taking the photos, fixing the layout on a phone, keeping it current and working out why the contact form stopped sending are all yours.
What do free website builders not give a tradie?
A system. A builder gives you pages; it does not give you anything that runs after each job. The three things that win a tradie more work are missing:
- A page for every job you finish. Searches for local trades are almost always the service plus a suburb. A page for each finished job, titled that way, with your before and after photos, gives search something real to match. We explain why in local SEO for tradies. On a builder you can write these yourself, but each one takes an hour, so most tradies publish four and stop.
- A review request that goes out every time. Recent, specific Google reviews matter, and the tradies who get them ask every customer, the same way, straight after the job. A builder does not text your customers. You would need a separate SMS tool, a template you trust, and the discipline to send it from the car.
- Someone to call. A builder's support covers the builder. It does not cover your site, your copy, your Google listing or why the enquiry form went quiet in March.
You can stitch some of this together with apps and plug-ins. Most tradies do not have the evenings for it, and that is the honest reason their websites stay the same for years.
What does a Rootech tradie website include that the others don't?
It is built as a system that keeps working after launch, not a brochure. Every Rootech trades website is fast and mobile-first, because most of your customers find you on a phone, and makes calling or requesting a quote the obvious next move. On top of that you can add job pages and Google review texts, which we host and run for you.

Job pages from your phone. After each job you spend about two minutes on your phone: a private link in the browser, no app, no login, voice-to-text in every box. You give the service, the suburb, a line on what you did and your before and after photos. A page for that job goes live on your own website, titled by service and suburb, with a before and after slider, added to your sitemap and linked to your other job pages. AI turns your notes into the title, the Google description and a short write-up, and describes each photo for captions and alt text. It only uses what you wrote, and checks in the code reject anything invented, so there is no made-up "20 years of experience" on your site.
Google review texts that send themselves. With your customer's OK, they get a text that names your business, with a one-tap link straight to your Google review box. If it is not opened after three days, one reminder goes out, never more. Opt-outs and STOP replies are honoured, as the Spam Act rules require, and every customer is asked the same way, which is what Google's review policy expects. More on doing this properly in Google reviews for tradies.

Support from the people who built it. If something we built does not work the way we agreed, we fix it at no cost. You own the code, the domain, the hosting accounts and the data, and ongoing support is optional, month to month, cancel any time.

How is Rootech different from other Melbourne web agencies?
We are a small team of engineers, not a sales-led agency. You talk to the people who build your site, and there is no account manager passing messages between you and a developer. That keeps the price fixed and the turnaround short: most builds are live in two to four weeks.
The other difference is what we build. Most web agencies make websites. We build custom software and AI integrations, from booking systems to AI estimators for builders, so the job pages and review texts on a trades site are real software running behind it, not a plug-in bolted on. If you want to see the wider range, our custom software for Melbourne businesses page covers it.
What does it look like live?
Blythe & Cahill Wall and Floor Tiling, the Melbourne south-east tilers whose website we built, have run job pages and Google review texts since 23 October 2026. Their projects page fills up as they finish jobs, one page per job, titled by service and suburb. That is the difference in practice: the site is a little better every week, without the tilers sitting down to update it.
Is a free builder ever better than a custom tradie website?
Yes, and we will say so on a call. If you finish a job a month, rarely take photos, get most of your work from one builder or by word of mouth, and just need a phone number online, a free or cheap builder is enough. Spend the money on your ute.
A custom site with job pages and review texts earns its keep when you finish jobs every week, take photos on most of them, work across more suburbs than your website mentions, and want more Google reviews without chasing anyone.
Frequently asked questions
Can I build a tradie website for free?
You can build a basic one with a free website builder. Expect the builder's branding and address on a free plan, and expect to do the writing, photos, updates and fixes yourself. Check the builder's current plans, because what is included changes.
Do Wix or Squarespace send review requests to my customers?
Website builders are built to host pages, not to text your customers after each job. To send review requests you would need a separate SMS or review tool, set up so it identifies your business, includes an opt-out and asks every customer the same way.
Who updates a Rootech tradie website after launch?
You add jobs from your phone in about two minutes each, and the job page, the write-up, the sitemap and the review text are handled for you. We host and run the job pages and review texts, and bug fixes on anything we built are included.
Do I own my website if Rootech builds it?
Yes. The code, the domain, the hosting accounts and the data are in your name. You can host it anywhere and hire anyone to work on it, and there is no licence fee.
